Disgraceful Blue is based on a series of dreams the artist had while she lived in Frankfurt, Germany. In the work, a daughter with blue eyes is born to an Asian woman. Her family neglects the newborn for having a foreign physical feature. The woman, split between her obligation as a daughter and a mother, jumps into the sea with the baby. At this point, the perspective of the narrative shifts from the woman to the baby. The story of Disgraceful Blue depicts a journey of a heroine who is “the other” in a conforming society. She hides her otherness only to realize in the end that her inner “blueness” cannot be erased, but it is born again in another form, in the next generations.
